The electron beam drilling

Principle of the EB drilling process

The process : at the place where the drilling will be carried out, a coating of 4 to 5 mm of silicone loaded with brass powder (named “ejection material”) is applied by centrifugation. When the electron beam strikes the piece, an extreme heat makes the metal melt instantaneously and is pro-
pagated till the silicone/brass coating. As the melting point of brass is much lower than the one of the refractory alloy of the spinner, it “subli-
mates” itself creating locally a high vapour pressure which contributes to the ejection of the molten part. As the energy is particularly high, each “pulse” of the electron gun causes the forming of a hole. The rates are very high : of the order to 3 holes superior to 1 mm per second and to 10 to 15 holes of 0.7 mm per second in 5 mm thickness.

Section of the EB drilling machine

The machine (see the sketch on the right) is made up basically with a 1 m³ chamber of drilling where the piece will be placed and an electron gun which is the main part of the installation.

The advantages : the electron beam machine can be operated with great precision. The power is defined by the accelerating voltage and the beam current. The position of the focusing point (working distance) is modified by an electromagnetic lens. The deviation, static or dynamic, is controlled by a system of electromagnetic coils. All the parameters of the beam can be adjusted continuously with a great accuracy. Consequently this machine is particularly high-performance (3 shifts work, 6/7 days). We have got 2 electron beam machines which enable us to drill holes of 0.4 to 1.2 mm of diameter in a depth of 4 to 12 mm.
